Alabama/Texas Art Exchange
October 6, 2017 – January 7, 2018
This fall, Mobile Museum of Art is collaborating with Houston Baptist University Art Gallery in Houston, Texas, to create an “exchange” program of contemporary art exhibitions featuring the work of contemporary artists from their respective states, presented concurrently at each venue.
The first of these exhibitions presented through this exchange are coordinated by Stan Hackney, Manager of External Affairs and Curator of Contemporary Art at Mobile Museum of Art, and will open in October 2017. Hackney says, “We hope to make this an ongoing exhibition project that reaches outside our state lines to expose artists to new audiences.”
The work presented at Houston Baptist University’s Contemporary Art Gallery includes selections from Contemporary Alabama Photography, an exhibition originally organized by guest curator, Richard McCabe (Ogden Museum of Southern Art) and first presented at Mobile Museum of Art in March 2017. Its traveling version will be comprised of work by 11 Alabama photographers, including April Dobbins, Jared Ragland, Jenny Fine and Celestia Morgan, and will be on view in Houston October 12, 2017 through January 13, 2018.
The exhibition presented at the Mobile Museum of Art, Painter’s Painters: Virgil Grotfeldt, Ibsen Espada & Michael Kennaugh, features the art of three Texas abstract painters. The exhibition was organized and selected by Jim Edwards, Director and Curator of the HBU’s Contemporary Art Gallery and will be on view October 6, 2017 through January 7, 2018.
