Alabama/Texas Art Exchange
at the Mobile Museum of Art – HOUSTON ARTISTS: Gestural and Geometric Abstraction
January 26 – July 8, 2018
at Houston Baptist University Art Gallery – Contemporary Alabama Photography
January 18 – April 3, 2018
Mobile Museum of Art collaborated with Houston Baptist University Art Gallery in Houston, Texas, to create an “exchange” program of contemporary art exhibitions featuring the work of artists from their respective states, presented concurrently at each venue. Originally scheduled to be opened in October 2017, this exchange was postponed due to the destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey in Houston.
In our effort to show support for our colleagues at HBU and in the areas devastated by Hurricane Harvey, the exhibition presented January 26, at the Mobile Museum of Art will be dedicated to hurricane relief efforts, and expanded to feature more artists impacted by this disaster. The exhibition is organized and selected by Jim Edwards, Director and Curator of HBU’s Contemporary Art Gallery, and will be on view at MMofA, January 26 to July 8, 2018.
The work presented at Houston Baptist University’s Contemporary Art Gallery will include selections from Contemporary Alabama Photography, an exhibition originally organized by guest curator, Richard McCabe (Ogden Museum of Southern Art) and first presented at Mobile Museum of Art in March 2017. Its traveling version will be comprised of work by 11 Alabama photographers, including April Dobbins, Jared Ragland, Jenny Fine, and Celestia Morgan. This exhibition will be on view at Houston Baptist University’s Contemporary Art Gallery, January 18 to April 3, 2018.
