Celebrating African American Art includes selections from the Mobile Museum of Art’s own collection of works by African American artists presented alongside promised gifts from the Collection of Jean and Robert E. Steele. Mobile native Dr. Robert E. Steele is currently retired from his position as Executive Director of renowned David C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland. The Driskell Center focuses on presenting and collecting works of African American Art and the African diaspora.
The works shown in this installation collectively suggest the growing vibrancy of artistic activity among African American artists since the 1960s, demonstrating a particular strength in the medium of print making. The selection of both offered gifts and MMofA collection works was made by the Steeles in consultation with MMofA’s senior curator and Assistant Director, Dr. Paul Richelson.
