MMoA to celebrate 60th Anniversary with Free Family Day
Saturday, November 9, 2024, 11 am to 3 pm
MOBILE, Ala. – On Saturday, November 9, 2024, from 11 am to 3 pm, Mobile Museum of Art will celebrate their 60th Anniversary with a free, family-friendly Groovy Birthday Party.
“This free event will be fun for families and visitors of all ages,” said Executive Director Jon Carfagno. “We look forward to celebrating all that Mobile Museum of Art has meant to our community, as well as the bright future that lies ahead.”
Throughout the day, MMoA will have a petting zoo, DJ Sham on the 1s & 2s, a time capsule burial, a dance party with Dance Without Limits Foundation, story time from the Mobile Public Library, and a Museum-wide scavenger hunt. MMoA will also offer bilingual tours of (Un)Settled in German (11:15 am – 12 pm), Arabic (12:15 – 1 pm), Spanish (1:15 – 2 pm), and Vietnamese (2:15 – 3 pm). Tasty food will be available from Cammie’s Old Dutch, Jefes Paletas, Los Rollin Bros, and Taz Shaved Ice, and the first 100 visitors will get a ticket for a treat from Cammie’s Old Dutch or Jefes Paletas.
Visitors can pre-register for classes happening throughout the day. Build and decorate your own clay plate with Lana Hall, or draw from the beauty of the outdoors with Derek Norman through botanical drawings.
The Museum will also have galleries full of masterworks by renowned artists in special exhibitions, including:
- 1960s Hard Edge and Op Art: Tribute to the Responsive Eye, a blockbuster exhibition that recreates the Museum of Modern Art’s (NYC) pioneering show The Responsive Eye, which coincided with the founding of MMoA in 1964. This exhibition features works from optical art (abbreviated as op art) and hard-edge movements and artists such as Josef Albers, Richard Anuszkiewicz, Gene Davis, Julian Stanczak, and Frank Stella.
- Fantastical Forest, which will reopen on November 9 after renovations.
- Surrealism: From the Collections of MoMA & MMoA, showcasing seven masterworks by artists like Yves Tanguy and Kay Sage, on loan from The Museum of Modern Art in New York as part of the Art Bridges Collection Loan Partnership.
- (Un)Settled: The Landscape in American Art, a collaborative exhibition featuring works by Georgia O’Keeffe, Andrew Wyeth, Jeffrey Gibson, and more, presented by the American South Consortium through the Art Bridges Cohort Program.
Admission to the Museum will be free all day in addition to the other activities.
This program is generously supported by the Art Bridges Foundation, the City of Mobile, and the Mobile Museum of Art Board of Directors. The Museum’s exhibitions and programs are supported by the City of Mobile, Mobile County, The Alabama State Council on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
