Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat

Written and illustrated by Javaka Steptoe

Brilliantly illustrated in the bold style of Basquiat himself, this Caldecott Medal winning book offers unique insight into the dreams and talents of an unusual artist best known for his graffiti series in New York City. Born in 1960, the child of a Puerto Rican mother and Haitian father, Basquiat grew up speaking English, Spanish and French. His art shows the influences of these and other cultures as he became the very public voice for everyday people struggling with complex social issues. Though he died at the young age of twenty-seven, Basquiat had already achieved fame as one of the most innovative artists of his time, and his paintings now sell for millions! The author, Javaka Steptoe, a New York native, has won numerous awards for his illustrations and stories, having been greatly influenced by the art and life events of Basquiat. This book will be of interest to readers of all ages because of the creative manner in which Steptoe presents his material, even examining the symbolic motifs found in much of Basquiat’s work.
