MOBILE, Ala. – On Thursday, August 24, 2023, at 6:30 pm, Mobile Museum of Art (MMofA) will host Alabama State Council on the Arts (ASCA) Executive Director Dr. Elliot Knight for an art talk on MMofA’s collection exhibition, Contemporary Alabama.
“Contemporary Alabama is a broad-ranging celebration of the creativity and achievement of artists in our state,” said MMofA Executive Director Jon Carfagno. “Having recently toured the exhibition with Dr. Knight, our team is so excited that he will share his vast knowledge and personal connection to the subject with our community.”
Knight, an Opelika native, earned three degrees from the University of Alabama including a BA in Visual Communication, an MA in American Studies, and a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies. He has served as the executive director of ASCA since 2019.
Contemporary Alabama opens a small window into the world of the visual arts in Alabama. The artists included were either born or have lived in the state. They represent different movements and use varying methods and materials to create paintings, drawings, sculpture, glass, ceramics, jewelry, and furniture. The work shown spans from the 1950s to today and is a mere glimpse of the many talented artists associated with our state.
