Between 1600 and 1900, Europe was in almost constant motion.

Trade routes expanded. Empires rose and collapsed. Science recorded how people understood the world in new ways. Revolutions, political, philosophical, industrial, disrupted what had once seemed permanent.

Art moved with all of it. As new buyers replaced old ones, art became a way of thinking about the world, not just decorating it. From faces and figures to coastlines and sand dunes, artists invented new techniques to match what they were seeing. They painted for markets that hadn’t existed a generation before.
